"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops" – Henry Adams Special Care Services I Adult Services I Location Map Education Program The Education Program serves special education students 5 – 22 years of age and operates at three campus sites in San Diego. The program serves students with developmental disabilities such as autism as well as students with emotional disorders and behavioral c oncerns. Individualized education and behavior programs are developed for each student to meet their specific needs. An intensive student to staff ratio is used, involving special education teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapists, counselors, psychologists and other aide level staff. Both academic and community-based functional curriculum options are available. Vocational training and transition services are provided to secondary level students. Consultation with a Board Certified Child Psychiatrist is available as well. WHO COULD ASK FOR ANTHING MORE? Larry C. came to Stein Education Center on April 21st, 2003. When he entered the program, Larry was reticent to engage in academic or social activities and often refused to communicate verbally. The work environment was extremely challenging for him and he was initially not available to suggestions or directions to improve his performance. But as time went on, Larry blossomed and the special young man that he is began to show. He regularly played chess with one of the teachers at Stein and compiled a book containing interesting topics he researched on the computer. A major change was seen when he began to talk to staff and students about these interests and accomplishments. Larry became an “all star” in the Stein Transition Program working at many locations. He graduated in 2009 with a full time job at MCRD in the catering area. Recently, Larry came to visit Stein Education Center and gave us an amazing update of his life. He drove himself to Stein in his white Honda Civic, which he bought himself and has paid for completely. He had a great smile on his face as he explained the details of the job at MCRD, which he has maintained since leaving our program last year. He makes a great salary and has become eligible for full benefits. Larry is a true success story. He applied the skills that he learned in a structured environment and applied them to the “outside” world. As a result, he has become an independent young man. Good job Larry - we are all so proud of you. WHO COULD ASK FOR ANYTHING MORE? The programs are certified by the California Department of Education as Non-Public Schools (NPS) for Special Education. Referrals are made by school districts that contract for the special education services or private pay can be arranged. Districts responsible for the student’s funding also provide school transportation.
